Ian Thomas

Year of Induction: 2025
Origin: Hamilton, Ontario

From his self-titled 1973 solo album to 2024’s “How We Roll,” singer-songwriter Ian Thomas has maintained the highest standards as an enviably successful and productive songwriter. His many hits range from the danceable Pilot, to the quirky Right Before Your Eyes, to the achingly beautiful ballad To Comfort You, each song with masterful lyrics demonstrating a mature understanding of what it is to live in the modern world.

Ian Campbell Thomas was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1950, where he inherited musical talent from his church organist mother. Inspired by the 1960s folk music of Peter, Paul and Mary as well as by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, he learned guitar and wrote his first song at age 15, which a teacher decided was good enough to be sung by his high school choir. Within weeks of graduating, Thomas signed to RCA Records, who recognized an exceptional talent. This led to his touring with the folk group Tranquility Base, and their Thomas-penned 1970 hit If You’re Lookin’.

After working for CBC Radio as a producer, Thomas launched his solo career in 1973 with his “Ian Thomas” album and the hit single (now a SOCAN Classic) Painted Ladies, which charted to No. 4 in Canada and No. 34 in the U.S. He explains the genesis of the song, which reflects a musician’s homesickness for a simpler small-town life: “There was one club that we played in Toronto that had
topless go-go dancers on each side of the stage. I was playing in some of the seediest establishments in Ontario, and often sharing dressing rooms with strippers.”

From these rough beginnings the debut album quickly earned Thomas a Juno award as Most Promising Male Vocalist. With this hardware in his pocket, he branched out to singing advertising jingles and recording character voiceovers, demonstrating acting ability.
There followed frequent solo albums, from “Long Long Way” to “Delights,” “Calabash,” “Still Here,” “Glider,” “The Runner,” and 2016’s orchestral “A Life in Song.” Over the years, Thomas has toured with April Wine, The Stampeders, Valdy, Al Stewart, and Billy Joel; he opened for the Beach Boys at 1981’s Canadian National Exhibition. He also sang on the hit 1985 charity single Tears Are Not Enough.

Among Thomas’s greatest songwriting successes is the catchy novelty song Right Before Your Eyes (“the Rudolph Valentino song”). The band America’s cover rose to No. 16 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart and No. 22 in Canada.

Another hit cover of a Thomassong was The Runner, inspired by amputee Terry Fox’s cross- country run for cancer awareness. Clive Davis, the Grammy-winning record exec, called The Runner “perhaps the most important song of the decade” when it was covered by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band for the 1984 summer Olympics.

1982 yielded Thomas a Juno nomination for producer of the year for the sensitive Hold On. Ironically Thomas was going to discard the song but his wife convinced him to keep it. The single reached No.28 in Canada, and Latin-rock sensation Santana’s cover was Cashbox’s No. 9 and Billboard’s No. 15.

Other noteworthy acts which have covered Thomas-written songs include Anne Murray (Good Again); Chicago (Chains); Bette Midler (To Comfort You); Bon Jovi (Stringin’ a Line); and Australia’s Daryl Braithwaite (As the Days Go By; All I Do).

Thomas is grateful that these musical giants chose to record his songs: “Every time somebody endorses you as a songwriter it is a wonderful sense of validation.”

Along with hissolo career, Thomasfrom 1991 to 2002 toured with his band The Boomers and enjoyed hits with I Feel a Change Coming, Saving Face and You’ve Got to Know, and earned another Juno nomination as producer.

Other Thomas creations that have been named SOCAN Classics are Pilot; Right Before Your Eyes and Hold On. Back to Square One received a SOCAN Pop Music Award, as did You’ve Got to Know. And he boasts a SOCAN National Achievement award plus the Hamilton Music Awards lifetime achievement award.

The multi-talented Thomas also composes for film and TV, including the theme for 1983’s hoser comedy “Strange Brew” starring his brother David Thomas. Ian has acted on The Red Green Show and authored the novels “Bequest” and “The Lost Chord.”

From 2004 to 2025, Thomas toured and recorded with the sought-after folk-influenced ensemble Lunch At Allen’s with Canadian songwriters Cindy Church, Marc Jordan, and Murray McLauchlan. Jordan says, “Ian is a brilliant producer; he’s a brilliant songwriter… he’s got a lot to say.”

Thomas reflects on his celebrated career: “It’s been a really amazing journey and the magic of it has never gone away.”

Thomas was president of the Songwriters Association of Canada from 1998 to 2000.
