Year of Induction: 2025
Origin: Mississauga, Ontario

Triumph: Canada’s Arena Rock Legends ⎯ The revered hard-rock power trio Triumph, formed in Mississauga in 1975, rising from high school dances and local bar gigs to selling out major arenas like Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens and earning a place in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Rik Emmett (guitar, vocals), Mike Levine (bass, keyboards), and Gil Moore (drums, vocals) were destined for stardom, combining virtuosic musicianship and dazzling, theatrical stage shows. Triumph’s unique blend of hard rock and progressive influences, secured their legacy in Canadian and international rock history.

Triumph sold over 15 million albums worldwide and earned 18 gold and 9 platinum certifications in Canada and the United States. They produced anthemic classic rock staples like “Lay It on the Line,” “Magic Power,” “Follow Your Heart,” and “Fight the Good Fight,” helping define arena rock for a generation.

The band’s combination of lyrical positivity and intricate guitar work became their signature. Remembering Triumph’s early days, Gil Moore said, “In the GTA there were an inordinate number of very talented musicians, there was something in the DNA; the whole thing was about how well you could play. When we put Triumph together, that same aesthetic was still in play.”

By the early 1980s, Triumph was headlining arenas on international tours, and had redefined the rock concert experience, introducing pyrotechnics, laser lighting, and elaborate staging to deliver what they called “the net gasp effect”.

One touring highlight was Triumph’s legendary set at the 1983 US Festival in California, where they played to an audience of approximately 500,000 on “Heavy Metal Sunday” alongside rock titans like Van Halen, Judas Priest, and Ozzy Osbourne. Appearances at the Texas World Music Festival, The American Rock Festival, The World Series of Rock, and Day on the Green were
also highlights.

Emmett’s departure in 1988 marked a turning point. He pursued a successful solo career as a recording artist, author, and music educator, while Moore and Levine carried on with the 1992 album “Edge of Excess,” featuring guitarist Phil X. Despite label setbacks, the band left a powerful mark, earning multiple Juno nominations and accolades.

After a period of dormancy, Triumph reunited in the 2000s, culminating in 2008 performances at Sweden Rock Festival and Rocklahoma—their first full concerts in two decades. This rekindled the band’s legacy and led to the acclaimed 2021 Banger Films documentary “Triumph: Rock & Roll Machine,” which premiered at TIFF and reintroduced their story to a new generation.

In June 2025, Triumph’s legacy was celebrated with the release of Magic Power: All-Star Tribute to Triumph (Round Hill Records, June 6, 2025). This 15-track tribute album enlists a who’s who of rock luminaries—Phil X, Sebastian Bach, Slash, Nancy Wilson, Joey Belladonna, Dee Snider, Lawrence Gowan, Deen Castronovo, Alex Lifeson, Jeff Keith, Mickey Thomas and many others, with production by world-renowned producer Mike Clink.

The band also made headlines that same month by reuniting for a surprise public performance in Edmonton ahead of Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals (June 6, 2025), marking their first public concert in 17 years. Joining Rik Emmett and Gil Moore were touring members Phil X, Brent Fitz, and Todd Kerns. The high-energy set electrified both the Edmonton crowd and fans watching across Canada.

After decades of relentless success, the band’s legacy has grown exponentially and earned the band some of Canada’s highest honors. Among their numerous awards, Triumph was inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame in 2007, into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2008, and into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2019. These accolades place Triumph in the elite company of the nation’s most influential artists and underscore the group’s enduring impact on Canadian rock history.

Today, Triumph continues to inspire new generations of fans around the world. From humble origins in the ’70s to sold-out arenas and hall of fame accolades, Triumph’s career is a true rock & roll success story – a *triumph* in every sense of the word.
